Purpose and Mission Statement of the PGY-2 Critical Care Residency Program

Mission Statement: The residency program at Lee Health is committed to providing excellent training experiences that supports the resident's clinical, academic and professional interests. The program is dedicated to preparing future pharmacy clinicians and leaders by promoting confidence, leadership and professional skills.

Purpose Statement: The Lee Health PGY2 Critical Care residency program builds on the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in the specialized area of critical care. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practicioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care that improves medication therapy. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency should possess competencies that qualify them for clinical pharmacist and/or faculty positions and poise them to be eligible for attainment of board certification in the specialized practice area.

Core Clinical Rotations

Required Rotations (approximately four-five weeks in duration unless otherwise noted):

  • Orientation
  • Orientation (Concentrated) - if early commit PGY1 (2 weeks)
  • Pharmacy Practice Leadership (Concentrated) (1-2 weeks) – exempt if early commit PGY1
  • Neuro Intensive Care Unit (NICU) I and II
  • Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) I and II
  • Trauma Intensive Care Unit (TICU)
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Cardiac Care (CC) I and II
  • ID Consult Iif early commit PGY1 or Antimicrobial Stewardship

Elective Rotations:

The PGY2 Critical Care Resident will have up to 3 months of electives. The following is a list of available electives:

  • MICU at Lee Memorial Hospital (2-4 weeks)
  • Trauma ICU II (4 weeks)
  • Pediatric ICU (4 weeks)
  • Nutrition Support (1 week)
  • Microbiology (2 weeks)
  • ID Consult II (4 weeks)
  • Antimicrobial Stewardship (4 weeks)
  • Preceptor (4 weeks)
  • Pharmacy Practice Leadership (2-4 weeks)
  • Education (2 weeks)

Additional Longitudinal Required Rotations

Project Management (Research Project and MUE)
(11 months*)

Each resident is required to mentor a PGY1 resident in the completion of a Medication Use Evaluation (MUE) in the Fall. The MUE will be presented as a poster at the ASHP Midyear Meeting.

Each resident is required to complete an IRC-approved research project to enhance the residents' professional growth and benefit the department through innovative changes in the way pharmacy is practiced. The research project will be presented at the Florida Residency Conference in the Spring.

Monthly PGY2 Newsletter (The Dose of Critical Care)
(11 months)

Each resident will publish a minimum of three articles in the LH Pharmacy Newsletter, “The Dose”. Each resident will be responsible for the content, coordination and publication of a minimum of three pharmacy newsletters. The PGY2 Critical Care resident will also serve as an editor of at least 3 PGY1 Dose newsletter articles. The intended audience is pharmacy staff and healthcare providers, such as physicians and midlevel providers.

Clinical Practice Advancement (11 months*)

This learning experience will give the resident practical experience in the application of the medical literature combined with clinical judgment and input from affected disciplines to affect clinical outcomes of patients on a global level. Residents will participate in the following activities throughout the residency:

  • Prepare a formulary monograph and/or a drug class review and present the recommendations to the Pharmacy Clinical Practice Council, Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee and other committees as applicable
  • Prepare a treatment guideline or protocol and present to appropriate committees
  • Review the Renal Dosing Chart in the Spring and Fall
  • Conduct the CODE Blue class in the Spring and Fall

Pharmacy Practice Experience (11 months)

PGY2 Residents will staff 22 weekend days (8-hour shifts) starting in August through June. The following weekends may be excluded from the resident staffing schedule up to the RPD’s discretion: FSHP Annual Meeting, ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and specialty area conferences. Depending on the preceptor schedule and needs of the department, a PGY2 resident may be scheduled as frequently as every third weekend. The resident will be required to work one of the following holidays: Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, or New Year’s Day. It is expected that the resident work Fourth of July (if on a weekday), Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Each resident will prepare and present two one-hour ACPE-accredited continuing education programs.

*Project days allotted at least once per month (August through June). Project days are to be utilized at resident discretion to complete any project related to residency program including but not limited to Project Management and Clinical Practice Advancement.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Spring and Fall resident/student topic discussion
  • Writing certificate — optional
    • The primary goal of the Medical Writing Certificate program is to provide participants with formal training in the development and editing of scientific and scholarly literature. The Medical Writing Certificate program is an optional certificate designed to allow participants to move through a structured and systematic educational experience to acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes and performance behaviors to successfully develop and edit scholarly and scientific materials. The Medical Writing Certificate is composed 20 hours worth of didactic (5 hours) and application based (15 hours) activities for CPE credit. Participants who complete both the didactic and application sections will be awarded a certificate that documents their successful completion of this program.
