Minimum to Midpoint Pay Rate:$20.04 - $25.05 / hour
Under general supervision of the Supervisor of Language or designee and in accordance with established policies and procedures, the Staff Interpreter provides both oral and written language interpretation services to non-English speaking patients and employees. Explains hospital policies and procedures and provides assistance to patients who have limited English proficiency. All essential functions performed in this position reflect the needs of the patients. Sign Language Interpreters are also provided for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Patients and their families. Assists in the facilitation of communication between non-English speaking patients and guests along with the staff in all departments. Candidates should be fluent in oral and written communication, both in English and the language source. Serves as the initial contact person and responds to customer needs in a timely and customer-focused manner. Schedules training sessions and ensures facility set-up. Maintains and updates strategic plans, reports, assessments, etc.
Education: High School diploma or equivalent required. Associate or bachelors degree preferred.
Experience: Experience in the health field and in interpretation for medical personnel preferred. A minimum of 2 (two) years speaking English and the other language source. Minimum of one-year Human Resources and or Administrative Assistant Experience. Previous experience in Diversity or Employee Relations preferred. Successful completion of a formal program in medical interpreting and translation with medical interpretation certificate is required.

Other: Must have excellent communication and customer service skills; a good working knowledge of computer applications, e.g., internet, Front Page, DI Diver, Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, MS Excel, Power Point); critical thinking skills; ability to work independently. Must be able to read, write, and speak English and the other language source. Must be able to function in an environment in which client may be seriously ill and receiving acute/emergency care, including life threatening events and end of life issues. Demonstrates good judgment in dealing with ethical issues that may arise. Must possess strong interpersonal skills to interact with patients, their families, and health care staff. Should be familiar with anatomy, physiology, and medical concepts and terminology. Must be able to accurately translate written documents on occasion. Demonstrated ability to interpret verbal and transcribe written medical and rehabilitative information in both the foreign language as well as the English language. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of cultural differences that exist within cultures. Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills, decision-making ability to manage caseload and time. Ability to prioritize work schedule. Be flexible and able to travel between patient care areas and off-site facilities. Ability to sustain a busy and flexible work schedule.
