Golisano Childrens Hospital offers theSpecial Needs Tracking and Awareness Response System (STARS) (Copyright 2025 SSM Health):a free service that helps emergency teams care for children with complex medical needs. STARS gives local first responders the tools and information they need to provide fast, skilled care during emergencies. The coordinator must have a comprehensive understanding of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) protocols and procedures as well as the capabilities and limitations of community hospitals. The Special Needs Tracking and Awareness Response System (STARS) Coordinator Pediatric EMS Liaison must develop strong working relationships with local ground EMS services, air medical services, and community hospitals as well as with the subspecialists at the STARS Base Hospital. The role serves as a vital advocate between Lee Health, area Emergency Medical Services (EMS) providers, and community-based hospitals by maintaining strong, positive relationships and ensuring effective communication.
This role functions as a critical link that supports smooth patient handoffs, aligns protocols, coordinates outreach and disaster response, provides education and training, resolves operational issues, and fosters collaboration to improve the overall delivery of emergency care
The coordinator will be the first line contact for all STARS-related inquiries and management within the STARS Base Hospital service area. They will facilitate communication between specialty clinics, the STARS Medical Director and all outside participating agencies, including hospitals, EMS services, EMS medical directors and families.
Education: Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing. Bachelors degree required.
Experience: Minimum of five years experience working with pediatric patients with complex medical needs. Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience in emergency medical services and/or critical care as a registered nurse.
Certification: American Heart Association - Basic Life Support (BLS), American Heart Association - Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) required. Certification in specialty area preferred. Membership of professional organization preferred.
License: State of Florida Registered Nurse License Required.
Other: Ability to complete all delegated tasks timely and efficiently and ensure documentation of tasks is completed. Prior experience with database management, typing, word and excel. Must have strong communication skills. Participate in department, campus, and system process improvement workgroups and/or councils. Agree to incorporate the following into daily practice:
