πŸ‘ What You'll Do

As an Ophthalmology Assistant, you'll play a vital role in supporting providers and ensuring exceptional patient care throughout each visit. Responsibilities include:

Welcoming and rooming patients while creating a positive patient experience
Assisting providers during examinations and minor procedures
Performing ophthalmic testing and safely operating specialized eye care equipment
Administering ophthalmic solutions in accordance with established policies and regulations
Collecting, documenting, and maintaining accurate patient information and medical records
Coordinating prescription requests, medication refills, and patient communications as directed by providers
Assisting with scheduling, authorizations, scanning, and other clinical support functions
Supporting patient safety and helping maintain efficient clinic operations


🎯 Qualifications

Education

High School Diploma or GED required

One of the following is preferred:

  • Graduate of an accredited Ophthalmology Assistant program

  • Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program

OR

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in a physician office or hospital outpatient setting may be considered in lieu of formal ophthalmology or medical assistant training

Experience

Ophthalmology Assistant experience preferred, but not required

Certification

American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) required

Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) certification preferred

Licensure

None required

The Ophthalmology Assistant ensures an excellent customer experience while assisting the patient and the care team in an outpatient practice. This position is responsible for patient safety, assisting in minor procedures, rooming patients, and the safe operation of medical equipment. Handles and administers ophthalmic solutions according to regulatory standards and organizational policy and procedure. This position is responsible for the collection, communication and documentation of accurate patient information/data and maintaining medical records according to regulatory standards and organizational policies and procedures. Coordinates and facilitates requests for information, prescriptions and medications as directed by the provider. Addresses patient questions/concerns with information as directed by the provider. Provides scheduling support, authorization assistance, scanning or other medical practice assistance as directed.

Requirements

Education:

High School diploma or equivalent required. Graduate of Ophthalmology Assistant or Medical Assistant accredited training program preferred. 1 year experience in a physicians

office or hospital outpatient department may be accepted in lieu of degree/diploma fromaccredited ophthalmology or medical assistant program.

Experience:

Ophthalmology Assistant experience preferred but not required.

Licensure:

Certification:

Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) certification preferred.American Heart Association / Basic Life Support (BLS) required.

Other:

Medical terminology, basic knowledge of ocular disease, communication skills and proficiency with electronic health record required.
